Music

Enhancing confidence and creativity through fostering ambition, independence and individuality.

Music is art, communication and emotion.
It connects and inspires the community.

Subject Intent

At Bolsover Junior School, we aim to encourage children to participate in a variety of musical experiences so that, the confidence of the children is enhanced. Children have the opportunity to be inspired by, listen to and appreciate a variety of musical styles as well as plan, compose and perform throughout our high-quality curriculum, which follows the national curriculum documentation. Children are to develop their understanding of technical vocabulary such as volume, pitch and rhythm and are encouraged to use these terms during their lessons. From their starting points we aim for all children to access Music at Bolsover C of E Junior School. This will provide the foundations needed to support the transition into secondary school and beyond.

Subject Co-ordinator

The subject co-ordinator for music in school is Miss Armstrong, who can be contacted on 01246 822324, or via our school email at info@bolsover-jun.derbyshire.sch.uk. Our music nominated governor is Mrs Pam Hall who can be contacted via the same contacts above.

The National Curriculum Aims

Music is a deeply creative art form embedded through life at Bolsover Church of England Junior School. The national curriculum is at the heart of our teaching, whereby our children learn to:

  • Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians.
  • Learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.
  • Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.

Assessment in Music

As with all areas of the curriculum, assessment is an integral part of the teaching process. Class teachers should keep records of work carried out, and levels of achievement of the work.

The Kapow scheme of work consists of six half-termly Units of work. For formative assessment, every lesson begins with the ‘Recap and recall’ section, which is intended to allow pupils retrieval practice of key knowledge relevant to the upcoming lesson. This section also provides teachers with an opportunity to make informal judgements about whether pupils have retained prior learning and are ready to move on. Similarly, each lesson contains the ‘Assessing progress and understanding’ section which helps teachers to identify those pupils who are secure in their learning or working at a greater depth in each lesson.

For summative assessment, each unit of work assesses the children's understanding and retention of key knowledge using an assessment quiz with multiple choice questions and one open-ended question. The children complete these quizzes at the start and end of each unit to determine what each child has learnt and what should therefore be the next step in their learning.

Class teachers also record pupils during practice and performance sessions. These recording allow teachers to review performance and help identify strengths and areas of improvements.

Children’s progress in Music is reported to parents through the pupil annual report and consultation meetings throughout the year.

Wider Opportunities

Previously, at Bolsover Church of England Junior School, we have had:

Ukuleles - Last year (2020-2021), the Year 5's had the opportunity to learn to play the Ukulele as part of their music lessons.

Djembe Drum - The Year 3's are currently learning to play the Djembe drum as part of their music curriculum. This provides all children with the opportunity to learn an instrument that they may not otherwise get to learn.

Guitar Lessons - Pupils have been given the opportunity to undertake private tuition within school to learn to play the guitar from a qualified Derbyshire Hub Music Partnership tutor.

Careers in Music

The teaching and learning of music develops many skills which can be applied to various occupations for later life. Aspiring musicians and those with a great passion for music could consider the following careers, amongst others:

  • Musician
  • Music producer
  • Talent agent
  • Events manager
  • Marketing executive
  • Radio producer
